INTRODUCTION |
When I refer to the "BEYACHAD" page in other pages on this web site, I am referring to this web page. During 2006, Maurice Skikne and I, scanned all the photos in the South African Jewish Board of Deputies Archive, housed in the BEYACHAD building in Johannesburg. We scanned all the photos in the Lithuanian section. I took digital photos of those photos that were too big for my scanner. The photos are kept in about 30 folders, and the large photos are kept separately. A few of the photos were taken in other countries besides Lithuania. In sections labeled "Big Photos" and "General" above, the photos are mostly of Lithuanian societies, congregations, and South African Jewish societies and groups, taken in South Africa. |
I edited the photos, and in some folders you will find multiple copies of images, varying slightly, as I tried to improve the resolution of the original photos. Some of the photos with descriptions written on the back, we scanned as well, and they will be displayed as separate images. |
The BEYACHAD building in Johannesburg, houses various Jewish organizations, including these organizations: SOUTH AFRICAN JEWISH BOARD OF DEPUTIES, SOUTH AFRICAN ZIONIST FEDERATION, ISRAEL UNITED APPEAL – UNITED COMMUNAL FUND, UNION OF JEWISH WOMEN OF SOUTH AFRICA (UJW). |
The photos can be viewed in 4 different formats. I suggest you use F11 on your browser to turn FULL SCREEN on and off to best view this web site. Also Internet Explorer seems to work much better that some of the other browsers. You can also use Ctrl+ on your browser to increase the size of the text or Ctrl- to decrease the size of the text. FORMAT 1. Originally the photos will be displayed as thumbnails, with a maximum of 15 thumbnails in any web page. For folders that have more than 15 photos, use the top right hand corner or the left and right arrows, to switch to other thumbnail pages. FORMAT 2. Click on any thumbnail to increase the size of the image to view it as a slide. Use the forward and back arrows and icons on the top to browse through all the images in slide format. FORMAT 3. To view an enlarged version of any slide, click on the small blue arrow next to the right bottom corner of the slide. You can download this version to your computer for printing. With Internet Explorer you can use Ctrl+ on your browser to increase the size of the image or Ctrl- to decrease the size of the image. FORMAT 4. Try not to use this option but use Format 3 above instead. If you click on any slide it will open an enlarged version of the photo on a new page on your browser. You can download this version to your computer for printing, which has the same resolution as format 3 above. |
PLEASE EXPERIMENT by clicking on the various arrows and icons to browse through the photos, and to view any particular photo in various formats and sizes. Above all, be patient and allow the images to download. |
